Whether this is your first Loser Logbook or you’ve been following along for a while-welcome! You are officially part of The Loser Club: no dues, no meetings, just one strange, heartfelt comedy movie in the making.
The Loser follows Daniel Koofter, a 30-year-old misfit determined to prove he can finally grow up- even if it means becoming someone he was never meant to be.
And after months of rewriting, researching, budgeting, building materials, and laying the groundwork for the people we hope will join us, all of that preparation has led to our first major creative attachment.
Which brings us to some very BIG NEWS…
We are incredibly excited to officially announce that Munn Powell, the cinematographer behind Napoleon Dynamite, has joined The Loser as Director of Photography.
Munn’s work also includes The Sasquatch Gang and Gentlemen Broncos- films that have had a huge influence on the visual language, humor, and heart of The Loser.
From our very first conversation, it was clear that Munn understood Daniel and the world of the film. He immediately recognized how important it is to treat Daniel sincerely - not as the joke, but as a real person moving through a world that does not always understand him.
Happenings
San Diego Comic-Con
In July, we took The Loser to San Diego Comic-Con- buttons, backpack, and all. While an unexpected illness cut our trip short, we were grateful for the opportunity to step into such an exciting world and proudly bring The Loser along with us.
Building the World of The Loser
Much of July was spent reworking the pitch materials and creating a new deck designed specifically for potential cast, crew, and creative collaborators.
That meant returning to the characters, the handmade world of Yorkleigh, and the particular flavor of weirdness we want the film to preserve.
It may not be the most glamorous stage of filmmaking, but learning how to communicate not only what The Loser is about, but what it should feel like, has been an important part of preparing to invite more people into its world.
